Hyoseok Cultural Festival is held to commemorate modern Korean writer Lee Hyo-seok and his popular novel 'When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom,' which demonstrates the connection between human life and beauty of nature through the dazzling scenery of Bongpyeong. In fact, Bongpyeong is the author's hometown, and appears frequently in his novels.
The Festival offers various participatory programs such as poem exhibition, literature night, Hyo-seok essay contest, nature experiences (e.g. fingernail coloring using balsam), buckwheat food cooking, and many more. Furthermore, visitors may tour Lee Hyo-seok's birthplace and memorial hall.

Educational experience programs, writing contest, traditional marketplace, costume parade, food sampling, etc.

Admission/Participation Fees

Take an intercity bus to Jangpyeong Intercity Bus Terminal.
From Jangpyeong Terminal, take a local bus bound for Bongpyeong (
봉평) or Phoenix Park shuttle bus.

* Local Bus Schedule: 07:35-18:55, runs 13 times a day

Having modified its name from Hongseong Naepo Culture Festival, Hongseong Historical Person Festival is held in Hongjueupseong Fortress every September, with the aim of become an educational festival. Hongseong is the hometown of many historical persons in the areas of literature, martial arts and art such as General Choe Yeong, a great commander during the Goryeo period, Seong Sam-mun, a scholar-official of the early Joseon era, General Kim Jwa-jin, who won the Battle of Cheongsanni against Japan, Han Yong-un, who was a resistance fighter to Japanese influence with his fidelity and integrity, Han Seong-jun, a folk dancer, and Lee Ung-no, who established Korean painting’s creativity and identity. The festival offers historical person-related programs that include themed performances, histories of the persons, and their life story, giving a unique experience. Excellent local food from Hongseong can also be eaten at the festival site.

Visitors of all ages

From Central City Terminal, Seoul Nambu Terminal, and Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Hongseong Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus or express bus.
Walk behind Lotte Mart - Hongseong Branch and take a right when Nolboo Budaejjigae & Cheolpangui is seen ahead.
Take a left at the first three-way intersection and then take a right at the big four-way intersection.
Take Nongeochon Bus 120 at the bus stop around GS 25 Convenience Store and get off at Gwangcheontongdari (
광천통다리) Bus Stop. (5 bus stops)
The festival venue will be located within 180m after passing the bridge on the left side.
